Vitamin D forms the foundation of the human body, figuratively and literally. The immune system protects the body against disease, thus upholding its integrity. The musculoskeletal system physically keeps the body upright. Vitamin D has an important role to play in both these systems.

Vitamin D and immunity

The immune system of the body is governed by white blood cells. These fight infections physically by engulfing the diseases causing agents or produce chemicals that kill the perpetrators. Vitamin D is converted to its active form by these white cells, which helps them defend the body against foreign invasion.

Not only that, deficiency of Vitamin D is known to result in increased manifestation of autoimmune diseases such as SLE (systemic lupus erythromatosus), RA (rheumatoid arthritis) and MS (multiple sclerosis). Such diseases occur due to the body’s immune system attacking itself.

Thus, it can be seen here that regulation of immunity is a must, and vitamin D is indispensable for it.

Vitamin D and muscles

The association between calcium and Vitamin D is well known. And calcium is necessary for the functioning of skeletal and cardiac muscles; they contract and relax by means of calcium channels or pathways.

Deficiency of this vitamin has shown to result in muscle weakness, especially in geriatric patients. They may show muscle pain or difficulty in getting up and moving about if in case they do not consume foods rich in Vitamin D or do not get enough sun exposure.

Low vitmain D levels  has also been associated with t​estosterone dips.

How do I ensure I am getting enough Vitamin D?

A short walk in the early morning sun can do wonders for Vitamin D levels as it results in the production of the compound in skin.
